Corporate Forest Responsibility (CFR), introduced by IORA Ecological Solutions and Forest PLUS was launched on August 28th, 2014 in Mumbai in the first private sector focused national level consultation conducted by the USAID/Forest-PLUS team in India.
CFR serves as the nexus between public and private enterprises for promoting sustainable business practices, conserving Forests and Biodiversity and empowerment of forest dependent communities in India. It facilitates private investment in the conservation and enhancement of forests by developing forestry based adaptation and mitigation measures. CFR is designed to be easily incorporated within the new Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Rules, 2014 and business operations of corporations in India.
CFR yields an opportunity for companies to focus their conservation efforts towards an integrated
ecosystem intervention approach. CFR addresses the entire value chain which includes
Recognizing the need for creating innovative practices in forest management, the Government of India signed an MOU with USAID in 2010, creating the Forest-PLUS program. The program aims to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and enhance sequestration through afforestation, conservation, and sustainable management of forests. This program brings together international experts in the economic, scientific, cultural, governance and community management aspects of forest management to identify and develop systemic approaches for forest conservation in India.
Forest-PLUS is a 5-year program funded by the USAID with an investment of USD 17 million. The program supports a broad range of activities at the national and local landscape level, piloted in four Indian states: Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The goal of Forest- PLUS is to demonstrate effective public and private sector collaboration in forest management and conservation as a key component of Indian readiness for REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation). This involves developing tools, techniques, methodologies and approaches for sustainable forest conservation to implement REDD+ at national level. When Forest-PLUS ends in 2017, USAID and the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change envisions scaling Forest-PLUS outcomes to other states in India.
